Diggin Up Dino's Unit

We started off our Unit by reading a  book called Dinosaur Eggs by Jennifer Dussling. The book tells the true story of fossil hunters in 1997 that find a Sauropod nesting ground. After reading the book each of the children got their own "fossilized egg."

Every day after we started with a nest full of large dinosaur eggs and the kids each took turns opening them to see which dinosaur we were going to talk about that day.

The 2 year olds practiced sorting dinosaur bones.

While the 4 year olds worked on making patterns.

For our Triceratops day they all colored triceratops masks.

For our Pterodactyl Day we practiced our numbers by playing a game where they took turns being the Pterodactyl while we  chanted...
Pterodactyl, pterodactyl turn around...

Pterodactyl, Pterodactyl touch the ground....

Pterodactyl, pterodactyl fly to your nest....
Pterodactyl, pterodactyl pick which number's best.
They would then pick a number and then fly around the nest the number of times they picked.
We did lots of centers on our Stegosaurus Day.
We had a set of dinosaurs that were missing their spikes, each one had a number on it and that is how many spikes they put on.

They practiced their names and the order their letters go in by making name Stegosaurus's

They put the stegosaurus's back in Dinosaur land by matching them to their correct numbers.
and added plates to our big Stegosaurus by picking a number 1- 12 and putting them on the stegosaurus.

For our Saurupod Day, we practiced measuring.

I gave them a glow in the dark growing Stegosaurus that they also measured...
and put it in our fish tank.

Then they filled it with water.

On Monday we will be getting our final measurements to see how much it grew.

They finished their day by painting baby sauropods and putting them in their eggs.

Other centers we did this week were making Playdough Dinosaur Lands

Feeding the dinosaurs "pom poms"

Lucas even let the kids build and play with his Dinosaur Set from when
 he was young,
just for our Dinosaur Unit.

We finalized our unit by making Salt Dough

and then Dinosaur Fossils.

It was a very fun unit, the kids did their final Dinosaur Rompus to the
Laurie Berkner Band "We are the Dinosaurs"
If you get a chance, look it up and do it with them, it's a blast!
